Another monument in the Mullan Trail series.
This is another monument to commemorate the Mullan Trail. It is located near the intersection of Mullinix Road and Martin Road, just southwest of Williams Lake, Wa.
The trail started near Fort Benton, Montana, and ended in Walla Walla, Wa. The trail comes through 4th of July Pass and roughly follows the route of I-90 going west, crossing the Spokane River at Plante's Ferry, continuing west along the current route of Sprague Ave, and heading out of Spokane along Hangman (or Latah)Creek. The trail continues through the west plains, and turns south in this areaand roughly follows the Rock Creek and Palouse River drainages.
The trail was intended to be the primary military road to ferry arms and supplies to protect the threatened settlements in the Walla Walla area. The military road served to open the Silver Valley and Eastern Washington area to settlement, and the silver boom in the late 1800's ensured this route would be used for ages to come!
