My 91 year old Dad Mr. Zellers Sr. Likes to ride on my Goldwing Trike and me Dave Zellers Jr. happen's to like to take him, we usually end up Caching. Sometimes Dad gives me History lessons , todays lesson was about the CCC at the Game Preserve.
According to my Dad his older Brother Wilber had a Heart condition that prevented him from Joining the Army so he Joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was one of the Men who built the orignal Ford across the Jordan Creek at the Game preserve, I found that Quite Interesting and I hear that story everytime I come here since I was a kid I Believe it to be true.
The Trexler Game Preserve has been around since 1906 when businessman Harry C. Trexler, the founder of Pennsylvania Power and Light, thought that the bison, white-tailed deer, and elk herds were heading toward extinction and needed a safe place to roam. So he bought acreage north of the Allentown area and a group of bison and deer at first and established a preserve. When Trexler passed in 1933 the Land was willed to Lehigh County.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work relief program that gave millions of young men employment on environmental projects during the Great Depression. Considered by many to be one of the most successful of Roosevelt's New Deal programs, the CCC planted more than three billion trees and constructed trails and shelters in more than 800 parks nationwide during its nine vears of existence. The CCC helped to shape the modern national and state and Local park systems we enjoy Today.
