Ciula Mare este un sat în comuna Răchitova. Este o așezare veche, chiar am putea spune că este una dintre cele mai vechi așezări din Țara Hategului, la fel ca și Răchitova. După unele documente se spune că la început a existat, de fapt, o posesiune a unor mari familii nobiliare, fiind vorba de familiile Ciulai și Mare, care au avut un rol însemnat în istoria regatului maghiar, distingandu-se cu prilejul diferitelor lupte ce au fost purtate împotrivă turcilor. Familia Mare s-a stins definitiv prin sec. al XIV-lea, iar familia Ciulai, prin unii reprezentanți ai ei, au ajuns la slujbe înalte, pe lângă Comitatul Hunedoare. Revenind la istoricul acestui sat, menționăm că este amintit în anul 1426, sub numele de Chwala. Sub numele de Csulla apare în anul 1447. O altă mențiune datează din anul 1452, fiind vorba de Vladul de Ciula. Tot în 1452 aflăm că regele Ladislau a donat, pentru merite militare deosebite, românilor Ioan și fiului Mihail din Chylah și lui Dionisie, fiul lui Andrei din Densuș, posesiunile Dealul Negru, Grosul, Ciula Mica și jumătate din Hatagel. Un reprezentant al familiei Mare, pe nume Filip Mare, renumit umanist, a ajuns legatul regelui Ladislau al II-lea la Veneția. Acesta participă la luptele care s-au dat împotrivă turcilor, culminând cu lupta de la Mohaci, în care și-a găsit moartea. Ciula Mare este amintită și în anul 1733, în Conscripția Klein, sub numele maghiarizat de "NAGIS CSULA”, iar în anul 1750 apare sub numele romanesc de "Csula Mare”. Din Conscripția Aran din anul 1750, aflăm unele date despre populația acestui sat. Astfel, în documentul amintit se arata că în Ciula Mare trăiau 34 de familii cu 160 de suflete, populația crescând într-un ritm simțitor pentru că în anul 1900 să ajungă la 300 de locuitori. Fiind un sat de români, deosebit de vechi, este menționată și prima școală încă din anul 1818; ea funcționa pe lângă biserică.

Ciula Mare is a village in Răchitova commune. It’s an old settlement, we could even say that it is one of the oldest settlements in Hategului Country, just like Răchitova. According to some documents, it’s said that in the beginning there was, in fact, a possession of some great noble families, being the Ciulai and Mare families, who had a significant role in the history of the Hungarian kingdom, distinguishing themselves on the occasion of the various battles that were carried against the Turks. The Great Family died out definitively in the century. 14th century, and the Ciulai family, through some of its representatives, reached high positions, in addition to Hunedoare County. Returning to the history of this village, we mention that it is mentioned in the year 1426, under the name of Chwala. Under the name of Csulla, it appears in 1447. Another mention dates from 1452, being Vladul de Ciula. Also in 1452, we learn that King Ladislaus donated, for special military merits, the possessions Dealul Negru, Grosul, Ciula Mica and half of Hatagel to the Romanians Ioan and son Mihail from Chylah and to Dionisie, son of Andrei from Densuș. A representative of the Mare family, named Filip Mare, a renowned humanist, became King Ladislaus II's legate in Venice. He participates in the battles that took place against the Turks, culminating in the battle of Mohacs, in which he found his death. Ciula Mare is also mentioned in 1733, in the Klein Conscription, under the Hungarianized name of "NAGIS CSULA", and in 1750 it appears under the Romanian name of "Csula Mare". From the Aran Conscription of 1750, we learn some data about the population of this village. Thus, in the mentioned document it is shown that 34 families with 160 souls lived in Ciula Mare, the population growing at a significant rate so that in 1900 it reached 300 inhabitants. Being a particularly old Romanian village, the first school from 1818 is also mentioned; she worked next to the church.
