Terenul de fotbal este o suprafață plană rectangulară pe care se desfășoară jocul de fotbal. Dimensiunile suprafeței de joc sunt reglementate de Federația Internațională de Fotbal Asociație. În general, terenul de fotbal este o suprafață înierbată natural, dar poate fi și o suprafață finisată cu iarbă artificială. Culoarea suprafeței de joc trebuie să fie de culoare verde. Terenul de joc are formă rectangulară, delimitat de linii longitudinale de margine și linii transversale de poartă. Lungimea liniilor de margine, reglementate între 90 m și 120 m, trebuie să fie mai mare decât lungimea liniilor de poartă, care pot avea dimensiuni între 45 m și 90 m. Dimensiunile terenului de joc, în cadrul meciurilor oficiale internaționale, trebuie să aibă o lungime cuprinsă între 90–110 m, iar lățimea, între 50-75m. Terenul de joc este marcat cu linii de culoare albă cu o lățime de cel mult 12 cm.[2] Terenul de joc rectangular este împărțit în două jumatăți prin linia mediană, iar la mijlocul liniei mediane se află punctul de la centru terenului, iar în jurul acestui punct, se află un cerc cu raza de 9,15 m. Porțile se află fixate la mijlocul fiecărei linii de poartă. Porțile sunt alcătuite din doi stâlpi verticali, montați la distanță egală de la colțurile terenului de joc și sunt uniți la partea superioară printr-o bară transversală. Distanța interioară dintre cei doi stâlpi este de 7,32 m, iar partea inferioară a barei transversale se află la 2,44 m, de la suprafața terenului de joc. Cei doi stâlpi și bara transversală pot fi confecționate din lemn, oțel sau alte material. Stâlpii porții și bara transversală trebuie să fie de culoare albă. La fiecare capăt al terenului de joc, în fața porții, se află o suprafață de formă rectangulară, denumită „suprafața de poartă” sau „careul mic”. Lungimea suprafeței de poartă este de 18,32 m, stabilită prin distanța dintre barele porții de 7,32 m și 5,5 m de la interiorul fiecărei bare a porții spre colțul terenului de joc pe linia de poartă și are o lățime de 5,5 m, trasată perpendicular pe linia de poartă. În exteriorul careului mic se află o altă suprafață dreptunghiulară de dimensiuni mai mari denumită „suprafața de pedeapsă” sau „careul mare”. Lungimea suprafeței de pedeapsă este de 40,32 m, stabilită prin distanța dintre barele porții de 7,32 m și 16,5 m de la interiorul fiecărei bare a porții spre colțul terenului de joc pe linia de poartă și are o lățime de 16,5 m, trasată perpendicular pe linia de poartă. În interiorul suprafeței de pedeapsă, se află marcat punctul loviturii de pedeapsă, la 11 m de la mijlocul liniei de poartă. În exteriorul fiecărei suprafețe de pedeapsă este marcat un arc de cerc care are raza de 9,15 m din punctul loviturii de pedeapsă. La fiecare colț al terenului de joc, se află un steag pe un suport neascuțit la partea superioară cu o înălțime de cel puțin 1,50 m de la suprafața terenului de joc. De la fiecare colț al suprafeței de joc este marcat un sfert de cerc cu raza de 1 m în interiorul terenului de joc.

The length of the goal surface is 18.32 m, determined by the distance between the goal posts of 7.32 m and 5.5 m from the inside of each goal post to the corner of the field of play on the goal line and is 5, 5 m, drawn perpendicular to the goal line. Outside the small box is another larger rectangular area called the "penalty area" or "large box". The length of the penalty area is 40.32 m, determined by the distance between the goal posts of 7.32 m and 16.5 m from the inside of each goal post to the corner of the field of play on the goal line and is 16, 5 m, drawn perpendicular to the goal line. Inside the penalty area, the spot of the penalty kick is marked, 11 m from the middle of the goal line. A circular arc is marked outside each penalty area that has a radius of 9.15 m from the point of the penalty kick. At each corner of the field of play, there is a flag on a blunt support at the top with a height of at least 1.50 m from the surface of the field of play. From each corner of the playing surface a quarter circle with a radius of 1 m is marked inside the playing field.
