Geocache Description:

8 September 1967 is written on the modern Hanstholm's baptismal certificate, because it was the day when the town's and the area's harbor were inaugurated. King Frederik the 9th rang the bell in the auction hall, and a business adventure was thus officially launched. Over the following years, the fishing boats from the surrounding smaller coastal towns sought the port, where an efficient business network for the turnover of the catch as well as the servicing of the cutter fleet was developed. In 1979, the first ferry could call at Hanstholm Harbour, and in approx. for three decades goods and passengers could be sent around the North Atlantic between ports in Norway, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Hanstholm. The ferry service was (temporarily?) discontinued in 2010, but fishing continues to flourish, and Hanstholm Harbor has developed into the place where by far the largest part of landings of edible fish in Denmark is traded. Annually, this is typically around 40,000 tonnes, of which the vast majority is exported via lorries to the markets in the EU within a maximum of 36 hours, but fortunately a good portion of quality fish also ends up in the local eateries. Try them!! The cache here directs you to much more information about the port. If you are particularly interested, it is recommended to show up on a weekday morning at 6.45, when the day's fish auction usually starts.
