Nonostante i crolli, la visuale del Castello di Pedres da Nord lo fa sembrare ancora oggi poderoso ed inespugnabile.
Il castello di Pedres simboleggia e rappresenta, insieme alla chiesa romanico-pisana di San Simplicio, il pieno periodo giudicale di Olbia. La sua origine, infatti, si fa risalire tra il 1296 e il 1322, e la committenza è attribuita ai Visconti, la potente famiglia di Pisa che dominò il giudicato gallurese per quasi tutto il XIII secolo.
Il castello caratterizza tutta la parte meridionale della conca olbiese, interamente dominata dall’edificio nonostante esso sorga su una rocca di soli 89 mt.
Scarse le notizie storiche riguardanti la fortificazione: nel 1339 era castellano un frate dell'ordine ospedaliero di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme; tra il 1355 e la fine del secolo il castello passa alternativamente nelle mani degli aragonesi e degli arborensi, per poi essere definitivamente abbandonato con la cessazione delle ostilità nell'isola, all'inizio del XV secolo.
La struttura del castello, oggi restaurato, si presenta agli occhi del visitatore come composta di pochi elementi: una cinta muraria di forma poligonale racchiude i resti di una torre a pianta quadrata. Le modifiche occorse alle finestre della torre indicano come questa, nel corso dei secoli, sia stata riutilizzata anche in tempi di non belligeranza, subendo le modifiche e gli adattamenti del caso.
L’impianto fortificato si compone di due piazzali cintati che integrano la rocca strategica naturale.
Quello superiore è costituito dal mastio, da un ambiente di servizio ora crollato, da un edificio residenziale con volte a crociera e da una cisternetta isolata.
Il mastio, conservato per un’altezza di oltre mt 10, originariamente era suddiviso in quattro ripiani lignei, con in cima un terrazzo pavimentato in cocciopesto.
Si può prudentemente ipotizzare che il nome del fortilizio sia derivato dalla presenza della vicina Villa Petresa, o Petrosa, il piccolo centro medievale estintosi con la crisi economica e demografica del XIV-XV secolo.

The castle of Pedres symbolizes and represents, together with the Romanesque-Pisan church of San Simplicio, the full Judicial period of Olbia. Its origin, in fact, can be traced back between 1296 and 1322, and the commission is attributed to the Visconti, the powerful family of Pisa who dominated the Giudicato of Gallura for almost the entire thirteenth century.
The castle characterizes the entire southern part of the Olbia basin, entirely dominated by the building despite the fact that it stands on a rock of only 89 meters.
The historical information regarding the fortification is scarce: in 1339 a friar of the hospital order of St. John of Jerusalem was castellan; between 1355 and the end of the century the castle alternately passed into the hands of the Aragonese and the Arborenses, to then be definitively abandoned with the cessation of hostilities on the island, at the beginning of the 15th century.
The structure of the castle, now restored, appears to the visitor as made up of a few elements: a polygonal-shaped wall encloses the remains of a square-plan tower. The changes that have occurred to the windows of the tower indicate how this, over the centuries, has been reused even in times of non-aggression, undergoing the necessary modifications and adaptations.
The fortified system consists of two fenced squares that integrate the natural strategic fortress.
The upper one consists of the keep, a service area now collapsed, a residential building with cross vaults and an isolated cistern.
The keep, preserved to a height of over 10 meters, was originally divided into four wooden shelves, with a terrace paved in cocciopesto at the top.
