Great Bear is a city park that contains many fun hiking trails of varying difficulty that range from casual gravel to steep dirt and hilltops giving great views. In the winter, the trials are a wonderful place to enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the groomed trails. Take some time to explore the park and enjoy the oak forest and hiltop views.
In addition to hiking, many thousands of people have learned to ski at Great Bear since it opened in 1965. Origially, there was a rope tow that brought skiiers up the hill along what is now a ski run name "Old Lift Line." In the 1980s, the hill's red colored chair lift was installed and remaind until 2021. When the red chair was replaced with the current one, a new top lift shack was also installed and the previous one is now only used as a starting point for all ski & snowboard races.
