Matsuyama Castle was constructed in 1603 by Kato Yoshiakira. The castle was control by the Matsudaira throughout the Edo Period. It was struck by lightning in 1784 and finally rebuilt in 1854 just before the end of the feudal period. It is one of the 12 remaining castle from that time.
