Geocache Description:

Easy stop and grab. Nice place to stretch your legs and learn a little Wyoming history. The container is slightly larger than a micro.

Congratulations to RebJay222 for the FTF!

You may have heard of the Oregon Trail, or at least played the video game, but did you know that several other trails branched off of the main route to Oregon, including the Bozeman Trail? Bound for the plentiful mountains filled with gold in Montana, this spot marks the trail's location as it passed through northern Wyoming on its way to, you guessed it, Bozeman. It's important to note that this trail ran through the lands of the Shoshone, Arapaho, and Lakota nations, who were none too pleased about its placement as it broke previously signed treaties that ceded the land to these indigenous tribes. The most important time of its use was between 1863 and 1866, and in that time 3,500 traveled it. Indigenous peoples killed between 40 and 50 of them. When the gold started to dry up, prospectors found new gold rushes to follow and the trail fell into disuse. You can still find evidence all over the state of its route, including wagon ruts, gravesites for those who didn't make the 500 mile trek, still-standing forts along the way and modern day historical markers and roads named for Bozeman.
