Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on a public footpath running parallel to the infamous 'Road to Nowhere' in Coedkernew, Newport, which is gradually being transformed into the 'Road to Nature'. Please note that the cache is situated very close to the road, but is on the adjacent footpath - a short circular walk can be done from Celtic Springs (limited parking) by walking on both the road and footpath which is permissible (the road is closed to traffic). Please note there is a very heavy CCTV presence on the road (dual carriageway) due to historic issues with fly tipping. An alternative, longer circular walk can be done from Dyffryn along 'Percoed Reen' - a footpath and cycle path, which connects to the Road to Nowhere, and you can then walk back through Imperial Park and the Celtic Springs development.

This section of dual carriageway was built during the late1990s when the area was under rapid development for the Imperial Park industrial estate in a multi-million-pound investment. The nearby LG factory promised to provide thousands of jobs and the road was built in anticipation of further development at the edge of the industrial estate which never came to fruition. The road lay abandoned for over 20 years which occasional stints to be used for filming of BBC programmes such as crash scenes for Casualty, and the Doctor Who series filmed in Wales. The road was recently infamously featured on a BBC Panorama show highlighting the devastating impact of fly tipping in the area - which has since been removed by the council at considerable cost.

The road is now in good condition for walking and cycling having been cleared of rubbish, and in mid to late summer is perfect for blackberry picking. Please note that the adjacent footpath is liable to become muddy after periods of heavy rainfall and there will inevitable be some overgrowth on the path.

The cache has been placed with the kind permission of Natural Resources Wales.
