O Covão do Coelho é uma aldeia situada na encosta da Serra d’Aire (39,5333606, -8,6706343), a 360m de altitude. Faz parte do Parque Natural Serra de Aire e Candeeiros. Uma aldeia serrana de solo agreste e pedregoso, território de profundas especificidades e características geológicas notáveis. Existem relatos da existência de grutas calcárias na área ocupada pelo Covão do Coelho.
O nome terá surgido de duas principais circunstâncias: a de estar situado numa cova grande, onde abundava vegetação e prática de caça, essencialmente de coelhos, e a homenagem ao primeiro habitante. Consta que chegou a estas bandas um pastor, João Coelho de seu nome, que por aqui se fixou com os seus companheiros, criando a noroeste do centro da aldeia actual um aglomerado de casas, uma cisterna e um lagar de azeite, num local chamado Chousa e a que depois deram o nome de Casal Casaleiro (ou Casal da Casaleira) ou ainda Curraleira.
Pensa-se que esta aldeia exista desde há mais de 400 anos, uma vez que a capela antiga teria inscrito por cima da porta principal a data de 1670.
Por aqui passam regularmente os peregrinos que fazem o seu caminho em direcção a Fátima, por vezes pernoitando nesta aldeia.
Com esta cache pretendemos dar a conhecer a quem por aqui passa uma aldeia tradicional da zona centro de Portugal, esperando que os geocachers disfrutem das paisagens circundantes no seu caminho pelo nosso belo País.
Trata-se de uma cache de tamanho pequeno com logbook, stashnote, material de escrita e tem espaço para troca de travelbugs e pequenos objectos.

Covão do Coelho (Rabbit's Pit) is a small village located by the Serra d’Aire hill (39,5333606, -8,6706343) 360m of altitude high. This village is part of the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros National Park, with rough and rocky soil, a territory full of remarkable geological characteristics. There are testimonials of existing calcareous caves on the area occupied by Covão do Coelho.
The name emerged from two main circumstances: the fact that it’s located on a large pit, where there’s a vegetation abundance and hunting practice, mostly rabbits, and a tribute to its first ever villager. Stories tell that once upon a time a sheperd, called João Coelho (John Rabbit), arrived and settled here with his companions, building, northwest of the village’s current location, a cluster of houses, a cistern and an olive press, located on a place called Chousa which afterwards was called Casal Casaleiro (or Casal da Casaleira) or yet Curraleira.
Many think this village exists for more than 400 years, since its old Chapel had an inscription above the main door with the date 1670.
Many pilgrims pass by on a regular basis on their way to Fátima, choosing sometimes to stay in these parts overnight.
We want to share, through the creation of this cache, the story of a small village on the centre of Portugal with whomever passes by, hoping the geocachers may enjoy the surrounding landscapes on their way across our beautiful country.
It's a small sized cache with a logbook, a stashnote, writing material and it has space for travelbugs and small objects exchanges.
