The cache is close to but not at the given coordinates! This will be an easy cache for many. All you'll need is a compass.
The Adair County Veterans Memorial Plaza consists of a large memorial wall and stone obelisk. The memorial was originally erected in 1932 with the names of those who served added in 1959 and 1976. The site also features a well preserved German Howitzer, captured during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of 1918, one of the bloodiest battles in United States history. The memorial wall lists the names of veterans who served overseas, while the obelisk lists those who died during their service. ( info from MissouriOverThere.org)
Start out at the posted coordinates for the cache. Here, you'll notice each panel has a number on the bottom. We will use these to get a 3 digit number important for finding the final location. For the first numbers, find the panel that states the year the Adair County Memorial was dedicated ( different than the date on the obelisk). The number on the bottom of the panel is the start if the 3 digit number we need.
For the last part of the number, identify the first panel that recognizes WW II vets. Let that number be the last number in the sequence
With our number in mind, it's time to go to our second waypoint. It's important the number is correct or you may be wandering a bit. Waypoint 2 will take you to the cannon on the left of the memorial. Stand with your feet against the plaque and face yourself "starin' down the barrel" of the cannon. If you're facing correctly then every cacher should have the exact same location and facing! This is where the numbers come in. Take your 3 digit number. That is the exact distance (in feet) you'll have to travel to find the cache. (according to my phone anyway). As for the direction to head, take that number you got again. Double it. substract 32. Use your new number and pull up your compass. Walk in the direction of that number as a degree for the distance of your original number. You should be right at the cache! Signature required and I will check periodically.
Reguardless of where you go, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you enter the stream. There's snakes in there. Everything can and should be gotten from ground level. Permission for this cache given by the Kirksville Parks and Rec department. Practice stealth when signing.
Park is open 6am-Sundown. No official hours are posted, but please search within reasonable daylight hours and be careful as the sun goes down as the nearby amphitheatre does night movie showings regularly!
