Geocache Description:

Largest Larch

Many years ago, not long after we built our cabin on Priest Lake, my dad and I set out to find what was marked as "LARGEST LARCH" on an old small-scale Idaho Department of Lands map that we used for navigating the backroads. We had no idea if it was the world's largest, Idaho's largest, Bonner County's largest, or just the largest the map maker had seen. Whatever the case, we figured it had to be pretty impressive to be marked as such. We looked in vain in the area indicated - the junction of Johnson Cutoff Road and Highway 57 - but couldn't spot any signs of such an impressive feature.

Some twenty years later, niskibum posted in the Idaho Geocachers forums about the largest tamarack near Priest Lake. Shortly thereafter, a cache popped up there. He had found it! That cache was sadly archived in 2012, but I will always remember the thrill of looking for it after the memories of the search with dad.

Although that old cache is gone, the tree still stands proudly, although it lost some of its top a while back to a lightning strike that apparently reduced its record standing. The trunk is still darn impressive, though, and so I figured it was time to hide another cache here.

To find the cache, park along Johnson Cutoff Road (do NOT try to access from the highway) and look for an unmarked boot trail leading into the trees at the point indicated by the "Trailhead" waypoint. The tree is only about 50 yards down this path. The camouflaged ammo can is hidden nearby, but off the trail.
