Dieser Cache ist dem bedeutenden Waldviertler Dichter und Schriftsteller Robert Hamerling gewidmet, der im Jahre 1830, als Sohn eines mittellosen Webers in Kirchberg am Walde geboren wurde.
Ab 1840 besuchte er – mit Unterstützung von Gönnern und Förderern – das Gymnasium des Zisterzienserstiftes Zwettl und danach das Schottengymnasium in Wien. 1848 schloss er sich der Revolution an und begann sein Studium an der Universität Wien (Studienfächer: Klassische Philologie, Philosophie, Geschichte und Medizin).
1852 war Hamerling als Aushilfslehrer für klassische Sprachen in Wien tätig. Von 1853 bis 1854 unterrichtete er am Akademischen Gymnasium in Graz, von 1855 bis 1866 arbeitete er als Gymnasiallehrer in Triest. Dort verfasste er Theaterkritiken für die Triester Zeitung. Im Herbst 1866 musste er wegen eines chronischen Magenleidens pensioniert werden und lebte fortan in Graz, wo seine fruchtbarste literarische Schaffensphase begann.
Im 60. Lebensjahr verstarb Hamerling am 13. Juli 1889 in seiner (heute noch bestehenden) Villa in Stifting, an Zehrfieber. Er wurde auf dem Friedhof St. Leonhard in Graz beigesetzt.
Hamerling zählte zu seiner Zeit zu den meistgelesenen deutschsprachigen Autoren. Zu seinen Hauptwerken zählt das Epos Ahasverus in Rom (verfasst 1865), das ihn einer breiten Leserschaft erst bekannt machte, und "Der König von Sion" (1869).
This cache is dedicated to the important Waldviertel poet and writer Robert Hamerling, who was born in Kirchberg am Walde in 1830 as the son of a penniless weaver.
From 1840 he attended - with the support of patrons and sponsors - the high school of the Zwettl Cistercian monastery and then the Schottengymnasium in Vienna. In 1848 he joined the revolution and began studying at the University of Vienna (subjects: classical philology, philosophy, history and medicine).
In 1852 Hamerling worked as a substitute teacher of classical languages in Vienna. From 1853 to 1854 he taught at the Academic Gymnasium in Graz, and from 1855 to 1866 he worked as a high school teacher in Trieste. There he wrote theater reviews for the Triester Newspaper. In the fall of 1866 he had to retire due to a chronic stomach ailment and from then on lived in Graz, where his most fruitful literary creative phase began.
At the age of 60, Hamerling died of eating fever on July 13, 1889 in his (still existing) villa in Stifting. He was buried in the St. Leonhard cemetery in Graz.
Hamerling was one of the most widely read German-speaking authors of his time. His main works include the epic Ahasuerus in Rome (written in 1865), which first made him known to a wide readership, and "The King of Sion" (1869).
