Bukchon Hanok Village
Bukchon Hanok Village is located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, two of the most representative royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. During that time, it was a residential area for high-ranking noble families (yangban).
As you walk through the narrow alleys between traditional hanok houses and make your way up to higher ground, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque view—layered hanok rooftops blending with the modern cityscape of Seoul, almost like a watercolor painting.
The highlight of visiting Bukchon is exploring the “Bukchon Eight Views,” which are the best spots where the old Seoul and the modern city harmonize beautifully. The alleys wind along the flow of water descending from Bukhansan Mountain, narrowing and widening along the way, creating an enjoyable walking experience.
Since there are many alleys and the area is quite large, it’s important to plan your route and time carefully. Among them, Bukchon-ro offers some of the best viewpoints—particularly Views 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7—and is considered one of the most pleasant walking routes. It has recently become popular among international tourists seeking the charm of traditional Korea.
Unlike artificially created folk villages where no one actually lives, Bukchon is still a living neighborhood. Because people continue to reside there, visitors can feel the authentic atmosphere of everyday life, which makes it even more attractive.
Unlike the large traditional mansions of the Joseon era, the smaller, modified hanok houses with shared rooftops and narrow alleys began to appear in the 1920s, when land was subdivided to accommodate Seoul’s growing population. Before the 1990s, the area experienced conflicts between development and preservation. In recent years, however, it has faced new challenges related to the popularization and commercialization of traditional culture.
On Bukchon-ro 12-gil, there are many interesting private museums. Although there is an admission fee, they are worth visiting if you are interested in traditional culture. Recently, integrated tickets that allow entry to multiple museums have also become available.
Bukchon-ro 12-gil is also home to “Photo Spot 3,” where you can capture beautiful views of Seoul alongside traditional hanok houses. This street connects to Gye-dong-gil. Nearby is Seoul Central High School, a filming location for the famous drama Winter Sonata, which attracts many Japanese tourists.
