“Bukchon Hanok Village” is the English translation of “북촌 한옥 마을”.
It is located between two of the most famous palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. The village was home to high-ranking officials during the Joseon Dynasty. The alleys between the hanoks offer a beautiful view of Seoul’s cityscape. The highlight of a trip to Bukchon is walking through the alleys to find the best spot to enjoy the harmony between old and modern Seoul. The alleys were made winding along the streams coming down from Bukhansan Mountain, and they provide fun by narrowing and widening. There are many alleys, so you need to plan your travel itinerary considering time and route. Among them, Bukchon-ro has the best view of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 “Bukchon Eight Views” and is recognized as a good walking path. Recently, foreign tourists who want to find Korea’s beauty have been visiting Bukchon more often because it is not an artificially decorated village like a folk village but a place where people still live and you can feel the smell of people living there.
It is estimated that small-scale modified hanoks with roofs attached to narrow alleys began to appear in the 1920s when land was divided due to increasing Seoul population. It was a measure to accommodate the increasing population of Seoul. Before the 1990s, it had been in conflict over development and preservation issues, but recently it has faced new problems such as popularization and commercialization of traditional culture.
북촌 한옥 마을
북촌 한옥 마을은 조선 시대 대표적 궁궐인 경복궁과 창덕궁 사이에 있어 조선 시대에는 지위가 높은 양반들이 살았던 마을이다. 한옥과 한옥 사이의 골목길을 돌아 제법 높은 곳에 이르면 첩첩히 겹친 한옥 처마와 서울 도심 풍경이 수채화처럼 펼쳐진다. 북촌 여행의 백미는 북촌 8경이라고 하는 옛 서울의 모습과 현대의 서울 시내가 멋지게 조화를 이루는 북촌 감상의 최적 스팟을 찾아 다니는 골목길 여행이다. 골목길들은 북한산에서 내려오는 물줄기를 따라 구불구불하게 만들어졌고, 좁아졌다 넓어졌다하면서 재미를 준다. 골목길이 많고, 지역이 넓어 시간과 동선을 고려하여 여행 일정을 짜야 한다. 그 중에서도 북촌로에는 가장 전망이 좋은 3, 4, 5, 6, 7경이 있고 걷기 좋은 길로 인식되면서 한국의 멋을 찾고자 하는 외국 관광객들도 최근 많이 찾는다. 민속촌처럼 사람이 살지도 않으면서 인위적으로 꾸민 마을이 아니라, 현재도 사람들이 살고 있어 사람 사는 냄새가 나는 곳이라 느껴서인지 더 많은 관광객을 끌어당기고 있다.
조선 시대의 크고 넓은 고택과는 달리 현재 우리가 보는 좁은 골목에 지붕을 맞댄 형태의 규모가 작은 개량 한옥이 생기기 시작한 것은 1920년대 토지 분할이 되면서부터라고 추정하고 있다. 늘어나는 서울 인구를 수용하기 조치였다. 1990년대 이전에는 개발과 보존이라는 문제로 갈등을 겪어 오다가 최근에는 전통 문화의 대중화와 상업화란 새로운 문제에 직면하고 있다.
