The term "blue moon" is used to describe a second full moon in a calendar month, which typically have only one full moon. And the idiom "once in a blue moon" is used to describe a rare but nonetheless recurring event. But according to NASA, blue moons aren't actually all that rare, recurring every 2.5 years or so. The term "supermoon" refers to a full or a new moon rising near or while the moon reaches perigee, its closest distance to Earth in its orbit around the planet. On August 30th, 2023, a rare blue supermoon will occur, appearing slightly larger and brighter than ordinary full moon. It's said that the next moon of its kind won't be seen until January 2037.
