Church Micro 2749 Deal - St Leonards
St Leonard's is the Parish Church of Deal, named after St Leonard of Limoges, a 6th-century French Abbot and the Patron Saint of Prisoners. The church is part of a Benefice, along with three other churches: St Richards in Mill Hill, St Nicholas in Sholden, and St Martins in Great Mongham. The current Church of St Leonard's contains elements that date back to around 1100. The church features three galleries from different periods. The Georgian gallery over the north aisle, constructed in 1819, is considered a significant example of its type by the Georgian Society. The Pilots Gallery, built around 1705, contains paintings of an 18th-century Man O' War and globe, although they are now faded. Lastly, the Victorian gallery, erected in 1860, displays the carved Arms of William III. In 1979, significant changes were made to the church interior, centering worship around Holy Communion and improving visibility of the altar.
