Geocache Description:

Pag lace is the unique work of the hardworking and skilled hands of women from the city of Pag. Lacemaking is very old in the entire Mediterranean area. In the city of Pag, its production was recorded already in the middle of the 15th century for the needs of women's and church clothing. Monastery of St. Margarite is a place where Pag's koludrices taught female children literacy and lace making since ancient times. Archival sources from 1579 testify to this directly. History remembers the time when Paškina were invited to Vienna and to the Viennese court with Archduchess Maria Jozef, the empress mother, to show how Paška lace is made. The word about its beauty and perfection spread far and wide, and its production intensified after the establishment of the Čipkarska school in Pag, which was founded in 1906 and operated until 1945.

In 2009, Pag lace was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. Pag lace has been entered into the UNESCO register together with Hvar and Lepoglav lace, thus becoming one of the seven intangible cultural assets from Croatia entered into this register.

and in order to maintain the tradition of sewing Pag lace, in 2008, the koludrice started with organized teaching of interested Pag women. Today, lace is sewn in the monastery by M. Placida Sikirić and M. Gabrijela Perinović, together with the famous Pag lace teacher Mrs. Urica Orlić, and Pag schools and the Association of Pag Lacemakers Frane Budaka take care of lace.
Over time, lace became an independent decorative item, an ornament on furniture, framed on walls, carved or sewn into clothing, as an ornament on sheets, pillows, curtains, tablecloths and as an ornament on church vestments. Today, Pag lacemakers can be seen on the city streets creating this most beautiful handicraft of women's hands. In the very center of the town in the Duke's Palace on Peter Krešimir IV Square. the Pag Lace Gallery was arranged. The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia declared the collection that the nuns of the ancient monastery of Pag have been collecting and preserving for more than 150 years as a cultural asset.
