Hobart Shot Tower - Unknown History
It is a matter of history that Joseph Moir, a skilled Scotsman in iron-mongering, settled in Hobart in 1829 and acquired multiple parcels of land throughout the region. Designed and built by Moir in only eight months, the Taroona Shot Tower became the tallest building in Australia when it was completed in 1870. An inscription at the tower proclaims that the first shot was dropped on the 8th September, 1870.
But hidden from history the role that R Herring had in an attempt to make the shot tower obsolete. In 1873 Red (as he was known) took a specially designed bullet to the the shot tower to try a get the British army to buy instead of the shot that Mr Moir was selling them. The shaped projectile was able to go further than the shot of the time and was more accurate.
To show the ability of the Bullet, he fired a shot from the top of the tower at a bearing of 160.83 degrees, and when they found the bullet it had traveled 625.31 meters from the shot tower. A huge distance for the time.
Unfortunately, due to the British Military reliance on the Musket shot, Red's invention was hushed up and little is known of happened to him
To honor this feat, I have placed this cache in the tree where the projectile was found
