Geocache Description:

I recently found out that most Oʻahu public parks, while enforced inconsistently, do not allow dogs anywhere in the park whether leashed or not.  There has to be an explicit sign saying it's an On Leash or Off Leash Park.  That list is determined by the Directory of the City's Parks and Recreation Department and this director is appointed by the mayor.  See the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu (ROH) 10-1.6 and 10-1.7 for more information if curious.

There are 8 parks listed in my area that have designated Leashed Dog Areas, so I decided to check them all out to see if I would bring my dog there.  This small number of "parks" that are listed on the city's website for my area are listed below.  Come with me on this journey and you can check out these parks too.  The park where this cache is located in Mauʻumae Nature Preserve

District 1 - Hawai'i Kai to McCully

  • Kamole Mini Park
  • Mānoa Valley District Park Perimeter Area
  • Mauʻumae Nature Preserve
  • Median Strip at Kapi'olani Park
  • Pūkele Avenue Mini Park
  • Puʻu O Kaimuki Mini Park
  • Sandy Beach Park
  • Wailupe Valley Neighborhood Park

Leave a note in the log on how dog friendly the park looks.  For the dog owners, how likely you would be to bring your dogs here more than once?

My personal rating for this one is maybe 5/10.  There is only one tree with real shade.  Around the tree are some broken benches.  There is plenty of grass and if I was here early morning I would walk her here.  Looks to me like a park that is more useful for the neighbors who are in walking distance, since the parking situation is pretty bad.

I saw people parking on the sidewalks around it, but I doubt that's legal parking so use your best judgement when approaching this cache and be respectful of the neighbors.  I opted to park further away on a sidestreet where I could find legal parking.  One of the other nearby caches lists a waypoint closer to the nature trail up the hill that you can park at, but it looked too close to a fire hydrant to me.  N 21° 17.165' W 157° 47.397'

Even if my dog doesn't like this park as much, it is a good spot for a geocache and there is a nature trail loop up the hill from this park as part of the same reserve.  I wouldn't bring your dog on that trail loop unless it's at a time or the day that isn't very hot, but the trail offered some nice views of Diamond Head and there is at least one more cache up there to find.
