Geocache Description:

Shenzhou Lu is one of the odder streets in Huangpu which has nevertheless fared very well, for a few different reasons including land use, length, width, setbacks and starting points.

In terms of land use, the short length of roadway serves a bewildering variety of businesses and offices. On the south side of the road is a huge pharmaceutical company alongside the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology (广东省微生物研究所(神舟路) and another huge pharmaceutical company. On the north side of the road is a line of low-cost noodle shops and eateries catering mainly to the transit army of construction workers building the highrises in the local area. It's quite a constrast, and not surprisingly few people choose to walk along the rather dead facades lining the big institutions on the south side.

In terms of length: it's only 500m long. It's hard to find many examples of 5 lane wide roads which are only 500m long, dead-ending at either end. Functionally and in terms of traffic volume it could easily have been a 2-lane road.

The width is strange. Five lanes, each a full 3.5m wide as if it's a high-speed road.

The street provides a study in setbacks. On the north, pedestrians are invited to walk along the facades and the result is an attractive walking environement. On the south side, not so much.

In terms of starting points, the road ends in the north at a point with a significant height difference with the main road higher up, resulting in a dead-end. The resulting traffic cell, where motor vehicles cannot pass through but pedestrians and bicycles (note this point!) can, is where the good fortune in the title materializes. To the south, it's currently a dead-end but the road network seems likely to soon extend to link up with a similarly dimensioned road 1km to the southwest.
