Geocache Description:

26 September 2023, 14:00 - 15:00

A geocaching event at the old Gorham train station. All are invited to join the host on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 2pm.

We will be staying at Gorham for a couple nights on vacation. Gorham has a beautiful preserved railroad station which makes a good venue for the event. Meet the host and cachers on the bench at the front of the station where we will have shelter. Together at this event we can chat about all things geocaching and learn about SideTracked geocaches. The free historic museum advertise that it will be open on the day of the event.

The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad was built through Gorham as early as 1851 but the station didn't open until 1907. It opened during the tourist boom at the time when visitors wanting to climb nearby Mount Washington (which is why I'm here) and visit other natural sights in the White Mountain area. However, the station closed in 1968 when tourists started to visit the area with their private autos in ever greater numbers. The station remained vacant until it was persevered by the Gorham Historical Society in 1973. Today the station is a museum run by volunteers and there is a collection of locomotives and wagons on the track outside.
