草津宿は東海道と中山道が出会う場所であるため、宿場の入り口は東海道の江戸方よりの入り口と京方よりの入り口および中山道よりの入り口の三つの入り口がありました。 宿場の入口は一般に見付と呼ばれる施設が設けられていました。 （中略） 東海道の京方の入り口である宮町と矢倉村との境には文化一四年（一八一七年）には黒門が設置されていて、宿内と宿外を境する施設として存在していたようです。
(Extract from local description). As Kusatsu-syuku is where the Tokaido Highway and the Nakasendo Highway meet, there were three entrances to the inn: one from the Edo direction of the Tokaido Highway, one from the Kyoto direction and one from the Nakasendo Highway. The entrances to the inns were generally marked by facilities called Mitsuke. (omitted). A Kuromon gate was built on the border between Miyamachi and Yakura Village, the entrance from the Kyoto direction, in 1817 (Bunka 14), and it seems to have existed as a facility that separated the inside of the inn from the outside.
