November 4, 1980 was a historic day for the United States. No, not because Ronald Reagan was elected President that day. It was because of another vote held that day - should South Jersey break away from the rest of the state and form a new state? Sadly, this was a non-binding referendum and two of the counties in South Jersey (Camden and Gloucester) refused to hold a vote, but in the end five counties voted to leave - Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Ocean, and Salem.. Of the counties that voted, only Ocean County voted to stay with the rest of New Jersey. In the six counties where the vote was held, 51% of voters voted to leave.
While this was a protest vote with no chance of success, it shows a divide in the state that is much older than 1980 and continues down to this day.
STEPS TO FIND CACHE
Start facing the "Welcome to New Jersey" with your back to the parking lot.
Turn left and follow the sidewalk around the edge of the parking lot. The sidewalk will curve around away from the parking area, keep following it.
When the sidewalk takes a sharp right to head back toward the information center, abandon it and (after cafefully looking each way), cross over to an island.
From the island, you'll see a picnic table. Looking both ways (I know it's one way, but you can't be too careful!) cross over and head toward the bench.
Between the bench and the fence are a row of trees. Count down X trees. X = number of counties that voted to leave and make a new state (not sure what this number is? Read the cache description above for the answer!).
Find the cache under a small pile of sticks at the base of the tree! If it's not under sticks, please put it under sticks when you leave it! Room for small trackables or trading items. Enjoy your trip to South Jersey err... New Jersey!
