Geocache Description:

Stheno, in Greek mythology, was the eldest of the Mermaids. Daughter of Forky and Ketus.

According to mythology, she was born in the caves under Mount Olympus. She and her sister Euryale were immortal, while the third sister, Medusa, was mortal. Of the three Mermaids, she was known to be the most independent and fierce, having killed more men than both of her sisters combined. Medusa was cursed by the goddess Athena because the god Poseidon raped her in Athena's temple. Athena was angry, but not with Poseidon. As a powerful male god, this should be expected. In Athena's eyes, Medusa deserved to be punished. As punishment, he turned her into a terrible monster, along with her sisters who sided with her. Stheno tends to be depicted as a thin mermaid with red snakes around her head instead of hair. (Source: Wikipedia)
