It has aleady been ten years since GC4DTHM: maskwA weekeNd Geocaching powEr traiLs took place 07/19/2013, so it is definitely time for a sequel!!!
This event is being held in memory of Eric Schellenberg, aka Erocks, who passed away of cancer in May 2020. Though it has already been three years since his death, the memories we made together have never faded. We met at GeoVenture in August 2011 and became instant best friends. We started dating in May 2012 and shortly after he introduced me to The Maskwa Project, which quickly became our favorite camping retreat. We came here together all seasons, summer to winter, and created so many amazing memories together. He was co-host for the first "maskwA weekeNd Geocaching powEr traiLs" held on 07/19/2013 (GC4DTHM).
When prebooking my camping for this summer, I discovered that The Maskwa Project had the lodge and both yurts available September 29-October 1. It was the perfect opportunity to host another event here so I prebooked it all. I also prebooked my favorite yurt for the weekend of August 11-13. This would give me the opportunity to focus on all the amazing memories and celebrate his life while hiding geocaches to be published for the event so those in attendance have the chance at receiving an FTF!
The weekend before this, August 5-7, a friend of mine asked me to go camping and canoeing but had nothing reserved. I contacted the manager here and we were able to try one of the new prospector tents. My goal was to hide geocaches along the Maskwa River while we were out canoeing. Through research, I discovered there were six portages and I wanted to hide one near each. I knew Erocks would have loved to do this and it made me smile to know that he would be happy I am doing it now. I managed to hide one in the vicinity of the first four portages.
During the weekend of August 11-13, I brought sixteen more geocaches to hide, but it was raining on and off all weekend so I wasn't able to hide them all. I managed to place six: an ammo can, a small lock and lock, two preforms, and two size others. It is my goal to hide more in time to be published for the event.
The Maskwa Project
The Maskwa Project is a low cost wilderness retreat center which has no running water in the lodge or yurts. There is a newer washroom facility on site with toilets and showers for both men and women, as well as one that is for accessibility. The electricity is gas generated with solar power upgrades. There are canoes, kayaks, and a paddle boat, with a variety of life jackets and paddles available, all included with the camping fees.
