There's nothing quite like watching the sun rise from the top of Mt. Tallac... but it's even more amazing having hiked there by the light of a full moon. This is my monthly pilgrimage and we've got a unique opporuntity to hit the summit under an August Blue Moon!
The hike is relatively strenuous, so plan ahead and be prepared. Good shoes, plenty of water, and a headlamp should be considered required equipment. You can make your approach from several starting points... taking the Mt. Tallac Trail past Floating Island and Cathedral Lakes, the Mid-Tallac Trail up from Lily Lake, or Glen Alpine Trail via Gilmore Lake. Each one offers its own unique obstacles and opportunities.
You will be entering Desolation Wilderness to access the summit of Mt. Tallac, so make sure you grab a Day-Use Hiking Permit from whichever trailhead you use. They are free and readily avaialble at all trailheads for this hike. I will also have extra permits for folks at the top in case someone forgets to grab one or can't find them in the dark.
Meet me at the top to celebrate!
