Isla Verde
Isla Verde es una Zona turistica del Municipio de Carolina. En esta zona observaras parte de una de las tres Reservas marinas de Puerto Rico conocida como la Reserva Marina Arrecife Isla Verde. Es la unica de las reservas localizada en un area rural. Este arrecife es una zona protegida por entidades gubernamentales y organizaciones privadas.
Arrecife
Un arrecife es una comunidad marina en agua poco profunda cerca de la costa. Esta formado usualmente por rocas, corales duros y diversos tipos de algas que se convierten en habitat de una diversidad de especies.
Los arrecifes de coral son ecosistemas muy diversos formados en aguas poco profundas, calidas de la zona tropical La mayoría de los corales duros prefieren temperaturas del agua que oscilen entre los 73° y los 84° Fahrenheit (23° y 29° Celsius), aunque algunos pueden tolerar temperaturas tan bajas como los 68° F (20° C) y tan altas como los 90° F (32° C).
Existen varios tipos de arrecifes por su localizacion
- Bordeantes o costeros: estan separados de la costa por aguas poco profundas. Son los mas comunes.
- De barrera: Estan separados de la costa por aguas mas profundas.
- Atolones: Son anillos de coral en medio del mar.
- De parche: Son pequenos y usualmente estan localizados entre un arrecife costero y uno de barrera.
Los arrecifes tienen varias funciones:
- Reducen el tamano de la ola previniendo la erosion.
- Sirven de defensa natural contra las inundaciones costeras.
- Son fuente de alimento para diversas especies marinas. Se estima que mas del 25% de la vida marina depende de los arrecifes para vivir.
La vida de los arrecifes puede verse amenazada debido a:
- Aumento en el nivel del mar.
- Tormentas y eventos atmosfericos
- Destruccion del habitat
- Pesca sin control
Como podemos proteger los arrecifes
- Hacer deportes acuaticos de manera responsable alejando los motores marinos del area.
- Elimine la basura en el lugar correspondiente para evitar la contaminacion.
- Evite usar protector solar en las cercanias, sus quimicos podrian ser daninos. Use ropa apropiada de manga larga para protegerse del sol.

Isla Verde
Isla Verde is a tourist area in the Municipality of Carolina. In this area you will observe one of the three marine reserves of Puerto Rico known as the "Reserva Marina Arrecife Isla Verde. It is one of the three marine reserves in Puerto Rico and the only one of them located in a rural area.This reef is an area protected by government entities and private organizations.
Reef
A reef is a marine community in shallow water near the coast. It is usually made up of rocks, hard corals and various types of algae that become habitats for a variety of species. Coral reefs are a very diverse ecosystem formed in shallow, warm waters of the tropical zone
Most hard corals prefer water temperatures ranging from 73° to 84° Fahrenheit (23° to 29° Celsius), although some can tolerate temperatures as low as 68° F (20° C) and as high like 90° F (32° C).
There are several types of reefs based on their location.
Bordering or coastal: they are separated from the coast by shallow waters. They are the most common.
Barrier: They are separated from the coast by deeper waters.
Atolls: They are rings of coral in the middle of the sea.
Patch: They are small and usually located between a coastal reef and a barrier reef.
Reefs have several functions:
- They reduce the size of the wave, preventing erosion.
- They serve as a natural defense against coastal flooding.
- They are a source of food for various marine species. It is estimated that more than 25% of marine life depends on reefs to live.
Reef life can be threatened due to:
- Rise in sea level.
- Storms and atmospheric events
- Habitat destruction
- Uncontrolled fishing
How can we protect the reefs?
- Do water sports responsibly by keeping marine engines away from the area.
- Dispose of garbage in the corresponding place to avoid contamination.
- Avoid using sunscreen in close proximity, as it may be harmful. Wear appropriate long-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from the sun.
