Reuben Kulakofsky was a Lithuanian born Jewish grocer that liked his weekly poker game at the Blackstone Hotel. He was a regular player on Sunday nights from 1920-1935. It is said that he asked the hotel owner, Charles Schimmel, to make him a sandwich made of corned beef and sauerkraut, then the owner added swiss cheese and thousand island dressing on rye bread to the order. There are other accounts of a New York City Delicatessen owner Arnold Reuben created a "Reuben Special" for a Broadway actress in 1914. His sandwich was made with ham, roast turkey and swiss cheese with coleslaw and Russian dressing. Each probably could claim the name but researchers at the Douglas County Historical Society in Omaha found a menu from 1937 listing the Reuben sandwich for 35 cents at the Blackstone Hotel. The Reuben with corned beef and sauerkraut has always been one of my favorite sandwiches. It's still my go to sandwich today. In Omaha March 14th is Reuben Day.
