MRS1650 (Melaka Riverside Series 1650 meter)
This cache belongs to MRS(Melaka Riverside Series) that sets along side the first 2 kilometers of Melaka River from its river mouth. Cruising through the river would be the quickest way to get to know the area, but walking along it is also quite enjoyable and possibly the healthiest option. Who knows what little historical and cultural details you find along the river.
About Melaka River
Flowing through the middle of the state of Malacca, this river was a vital trade route during the heyday of Malacca Sultanate in the 15th century. River source is traced from the southern end of the Titiwangsa Mountains in the neighbouring state of Negeri Sembilan, at Kampung Orek, Tampin District as the Tampin River which flows south and Pulau Sebang, the latter is beyond the Negeri Sembilan-Malacca border. At Gadek in Alor Gajah District, the Batang Melaka River merges with the Tampin River to form the Malacca River and it feeds into the Strait of Malacca.
Sections before the river mouth is conversed as the core zone of Heritage CIty with historical element. It is also where the departure point for river cruise. Tourists would hop on a speed boat and embark on a sightseeing tour of the city and its historic core as it cruises along the river, between Pengkalan Rama in the east and Bandar Hilir near the coast of the Strait of Malacca. Along this river course, there are other tourist attraction, wall murals, and iconic bridges that surrounds the riverside. If you are more of an on-foot person, join the local and other tourist to walk along the Malacca riverside.
Ruins of Rosary Chapel
Towards the east side of this cache, lays the ruins of Rosary Chapel/ Cappella Ermida de Rosario. This Catholic Chapel was built as a substitute to Saint Lorenzo or Saint Lawrence’s Chapel in year 1700. The role and function of the Rosary Chapel slowly stopped after the completion of Saint Peter’s Church which was declared as the official main church in Malacca in year 1710. Sadly for this Portuguese chapel, it was left to decay over 2 centuries until fences and information board was erected.
