Geocache Description:

This cache qualifies for the Disappearing RR Blues bonus cache. This series highlights the remnants of railways past and present in NW Oregon.

When it opened in 1890, the Independence and Monmouth Railroad was touted as the nation's shorted railroad at about 2.5 miles. The line linked the two aforementioned cities in its title. It had one stop between the two towns at Talmadge. In 1902 the I&M connected with the Southern Pacific in Monmouth and ran onto Dallas and Airlie. At one point, the railroad had three locomotives, two passenger cars, and two combine cars (freight & passenger). It also had a small gasoline-powered passenger car dubbed "The Peanut Roaster". By 1913 automobiles came into play, hurting the railroad's bottom line. The line ended service in 1918. Today there is a free bus trolley that links the two towns.
