Geocache Description:

According to shrine legend, when Kageyuki, the third son of Sugawara no Michizane, visited Dazaifu in Kyushu to inquire about his father's safety, Michizane himself drew a portrait of himself and said, "When I die, carry my bones on your back and travel around the country. If I am too heavy to move, then I shall know that I have obtained the victory of the earth, and I shall build a tomb for myself.

After more than 20 years of traveling around the country with several of his vassals, he came to Ibaraki Prefecture in the 4th year of Extension (926) and built a mound in Hatori, Makabe Town, where he was enshrined for a time along with Minamigo, Taira-no-Kane, and other powerful families of the region. Three years later, in the 7th year of Extension (929), an island on the shore of Lake Iinuma (the present location) was designated as the tomb of Michizane, where he would reside forever. It is said that this is the oldest Tenmangu Shrine in the Kanto and Tohoku regions, and is one of the three Tenmangu shrines in Japan, and is also called the Gobyo Tenjin Shrine because it is the only Tenmangu Shrine where the remains of the deceased were used as the sacred body and enshrined by the family.

The cache was hidden in Tenmangu.

The cache does not contain a pen, so please bring your own.
