Geocache Description:

In 1872 The Drum Mountain Mining District was organized in the mountains straddling the Juab-Millard county line. In 1879 Harry Joy and Charles Howard, two mining engineers from Michigan, reorganized it into the Detroit District, named after their hometown, and established mining operations and a smelter at the new town of Joy. The town became a supply center for miners and ranchers in the area. Dwellings were erected as well as a hotel, cafe, and store. The Howard Mine attempted to operate a smelter at Joy, but it was too expensive to haul fuel to it, so it did not last long. The WArd Leasing Company worked a mine about one mile south of Joy until 1946. Check out some of our other desert caches
