As you get closer to the small reserve where the GZ is found, clues abound as to this site's curious past in the names of subdivisions and even the name of the retirement village.
In 1984 the New Zealand Heritage Park was opened at this site, a kitschy theme park where you were welcomed by Micky the Moa. Attractions included the Butterfly Room, Adventure Island, Mini Golf, Farm Show, and being paddled in a waka. There were also Maori cultural shows performed by entertainers trained by Sir Howard Morrison.
For a short time it was a must-see on cruise ship visitors' itinerary. Sadly the theme park was short-lived and closed in 1988.
