The Rev. William Wallinger was the first curate of St Mary in the Castle from 1828 to 1834. He lived at Castledown House and gave his name to Wallinger’s Walk.
Wallinger’s Walk Gardens was once the cemetery of St Mary-in-the-Castle church from 1828 to 1900.

‘The boundary walls were constructed of fine quality sandstone and the entire site was alphabetically grid referenced by engraving characters onto the facing stone running parallel to each other; a unique feature of the cemetery.’
