Chestnut mountain Challenge Traditional Cache
Daring Davis': I have not been able to go up and replace the cache. It is a great area to explore so if another geocacher wanted to place one in the area and is better able to keep up with it that would be great. Not sure how good the roads are up there so a 4x4 is the best bet, I would think.

This cache is on top of Mt Chestnut in the coleman river wilderness
northwest of Clayton Ga.A fun climb in a 4x4,and a very difficult
climb by foot.
Are you ready for the challenge of climbing chestnut mt.There are
two ways to the top.First by truck or suv, best to have a 4x4 but a
two wheel drive can make it.The second way is by foot which is not
a easy task.If you attempt it by foot be in good shape and bring
water. To get to the area take Hwy 76 west out of Clayton Ga,take a
right on Persimon Rd,you will go through the community of
Persimon. After you pass the road to the Tallulah river you take a
left on to Coleman river rd.Stay stright on coleman river rd it
will turn into FS road 54 and will get a little more rugged. You
will go approx 2.4 miles and cross the coleman river, you will then
come to a intersection.You must now make a decision,if you have a
truck or suv you can turn left and attempt the drive,if you dont
well you can go right or left and see how far you can get before
you have to park and walk.I would not drive a car anyfuther past
the intersection it starts to get alot more rugged. If you attempt
to climb one starting point from the road to start up crosscountry
is at N34 57.293 W083 31.535,I had a reading of .73 to the cache
but it is all up hill and can be very steep.BE CAREFUL.If you drive
after you turn left you are on FS road 54a it will take you all the
way just follow your gps.A 2 wheel drive can make it but it will be
hard on it.The last 0.1 tenth mile to top of mt you will need a 4x4
you might want to park and walk.If you like driving rough mt roads
you will love driving this, the views are great from the top.If you
try to walk the road its 4.2 miles from the T-bone intersection to
the top. There is deer hunting in this area so during hunting season
if you walk wear hunter orange. Cords for the top of the mt are N34
57.899 W083 31.404 have fun. Went up on 10/29/2004 and found the
road in rough shape. Several trees down and a wash out on the
road. You can still get up there in a good 4x4 the wash out can be a
challenge but I did put some logs in the hole to help and I cut
several trees out of the way, but the last 500 feet up to the top
is blocked by a BIG fallen tree so you will have to walk. Good
luck. P.S. you can go to the right at the t-bone but it will take a
real 4x4 to get up that way, or you can walk. 01/01/05 I have
replaced the cache in a new location near the top. It appears the
forest service as replanted the top of the mountain as a food plot
and they do not allow you to drive to the very top. You can still
drive all the way execpt for the last tenth of a mile, park and walk
on up for a great view. You can to the top on foot, just no
vehicles. Also the road going up has been worked on and it is not
nearly as bad as it was, a 2 wheel drive may make it now but it
could be a little rough going.
