Boys Town was established in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan. With a loan of $90, he rented a home to care for 5 boys. In the 1930's, several hundred boys lived in in the new location on the outskirts of Omaha. They created their own geovernment, having a mayor, council, & commissioners. in order to garner public support, Boy's Town became the subject of many newspaper acticles.
MGM Studios took notice & in 1938 a movie was filmed with Spencer Tracy & Mickey Rooney.
In 1943 the image of a boy carry a younger boy was adopted & captioned "He ain't heavy, Father, he's my brother". The phrase comes from the United Free Church of Scotland.
