The idea of town twinning emerged mainly after World War II as a grassroots initiative to heal the wounds left by two world wars in Europe and has since proven to be a long-term effective instrument for bringing people from different countries together. The German twin city of Thornbury is Bockenem [ˈbɔkənəm], a town in the district of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony. If you want to find out a bit more on that town, you can just read on. If not (you probably wouldn't read this anyway if not) you can skip the rest and head straight for the cache.

Bokenem was founded in 1154 and the "core" city has a population of 4,300 today. Including all surrounding 17 villages belonging to Bockenem, the total population is slightly above 10,000, most of which adhere to the Lutheran (protestant) faith. Bockenem is located on the German Timber-Frame Road. Bockenem suffered multiple severe fires through the centuries two of which destroyed up to 3/4 of all buildings in 1522 and again in 1847.
This geocache is dedicated to a German family (though not from Bockenem 😉) that are living near the cache.
