Church Micro 5496...Melbourn - URC
Melbourn United Reformed Church was built in 1717. It holds interesting records of its members who emigrated to Australia in the 1800s, a recessive time for people in the countryside. Over the past few years numerous descendants of these people in Australia have been in touch with the Melbourn History Group in an effort to trace their origins. Opposite the present church is the site of what was once a magnificent, larger Congregational Chapel, built to house the large number of its members in the latter 19th century. Sadly it was demolished in the mid 20th century due to structural problems. Its remaining foundations are now surrounded by the chapel’s cemetery.
