Geocache Description:

Brown Well

Location Information

Access Information

This cache is 2WD accessible. Access is via Koorda-Kulja Road (sealed). The access track from the road is not suitable for caravans or towing vehicles as there is no turning loop on the track.

General Information

In February 1912, Inspector Brown with a team of well sinkers struck water eight miles north east of Badgerin. This well, Location 174, constructed and timbered by P.W.D. day labour, was first known as Brownie's Well, then Brown Well. However, it was bitterly disappointing, especially as it was thought there might be a good supply not tapped.

Inspector Brown was transferred to Mt. Marshall just after this, and the P.W.D. office was not responsive to pleas for further expense. The well, they said, was not used because it was too deep, it was on a sandy track three miles off the main road, so not easy to find, and would only be used when water was very short. That, said the settlers, was when they wanted it and a running fight went on for years.

A tank at Brown Well was later constructed called the Newcarlbeon Road Tank AA 410, 200,000 gallon capacity on Water Reserve 2766. In 1929, Reserve 19997 was gazetted and was vested in the Minister for Water Resources.

Cache Information

This cache is a 200mL clip lock container with painted camouflage. The cache included toy swaps for the kids, a pen and a logbook at time of placement. There is room for trackables in this cache.

As is always the case, please make sure that you return the cache as found, to ensure that future geocachers enjoy the same experience that you do.
