Olipa kerran Ahviolla
Olipa
kerran Ahviolla eli OKA -kätkösarja esittelee Ahvionkosken 1,2 kilometriä
pitkää vapaana virtaavaa koskialuetta ja saarisokkeloa. Kosket on suojeltu
on hyvä huomioida jalkineita valitessa. Muista kerätä lokikirjoista
talteen koodit matkan varrelle osuvaa bonuskätköä varten.
Once upon a time in Ahvio (OKA) cache series introduces
Ahvionkoski's 1,2 kilometer long free-flowing rapids area and island
maze. The area belongs to the Kymijoki Natura 2000 and is covered by the
act on the protection of rapids. There are 10 caches in the series and
if you collect them at once, the distance covered is more than 4 km. The
flow of the river varies along the way, but there is no need to go to
the highest rapids in the area (Martinkoski and Kotokoski). The
conditions vary according to the seasons, and you can find information
about the river flows and the temperature of the water from the
Environmental Administration's Water service: www.vesi.fi (ymparisto.fi)
You can collect the caches in numerical order or in the order you
choose. Note that there are a few cabins in the area. Four of the caches
can be reached without landing, but the others require going ashore, and
this is a good thing to consider when choosing footwear. Don't forget to
collect the codes from the logbooks for the bonus
cache.

waypoint.
Multin alkupisteeltä löydät vesillelaskupaikan ja kalastusta koskevan
ohjetaulun koivuun kiinnitettynä. Valitse ohjetaulun ylimmän rivin
ensimmäisen kirjaimen perusteella loppupisteen koordinaatit
vaihtoehdoista:
- J: N 60° 38.160' E 26° 45.950'
- K: N 60° 38.179' E 26° 45.978'
- L: N 60° 38.200' E 26° 46.020'
Siirtyminen loppupisteelle onnistuu pitkin edessäsi aukeavaa Osolahtea,
jonka vesi on lähes seisovaa. Kätkön käsiin saaminen pitäisi onnistua
ilman rantautumista.

A two-stage multicache. At first stage there is place to start your
rivertrip. Please, see the
waypoint
for parking. Look for the 1st letter of the 1st row in the infoboard,
which tells about the fishing rules. Choose the coordinates for the cache
from above according that letter. There is not much flow on the way along
to the cache and it should be possible to log it without going ashore.
Kymijoen lähihistoriaa
Lähes kaikki Kymijoen koski- ja virta-alueet ovat muuttuneet
ihmistoiminnan vuoksi. Muutokset johtuvat vesistörakentamisesta sekä
tulvasuojelun ja uiton takia tehdyistä koskiperkauksista. Tästä näet
esimerkkejä myös Ahvionkosken alueella, jossa mm. Keskikoski on louhittu
Päijänteensaaren halki 1930-luvulla.
Kymijoen saastumisesta pahimmat esimerkit löytyvät Kuusankosken ja
Keltin väliltä, jossa pohjasedimentissä on maailman korkeimpia mitattuja
Pohjaan
kerrostuneet ympäristömyrkyt ovat sitoutuneet sedimentteihin, eivätkä
onneksi lähde liikkeelle, ellei pohjaa käsitellä esimerkiksi
ruoppauksin.
Kymijoen vesi on kuitenkin puhdistunut tasaisesti viimeisten
vuosikymmenien aikana mm. päästöjen vähenemisen ansiosta. Nykyään
Kymijoki onkin palannut merkittäväksi Etelä-Suomen lohijoeksi.
The recent history of the river Kymi
Almost all Kymijoki's rapids and currents of waters have changed due to
human activity. The changes have been made due to the construction of
waterways, flood protection and to make floating channels for log
floating. You can also see examples of this in the Ahvionkoski area,
where e.g. Keskikoski was quarred through Päijänteensaari in the 1930s.
The worst examples of Kymijoki pollution can be found
between Kuusankoski and Kelti, where the bottom sediments have the
world's highest measured dioxin concentrations and the river has been
called one of the most toxic in the world. The dioxins, furans and
mercury in the bottom sediments mainly came from the riverside industry,
from the chemicals used in the production of the wood preservative Ky 5
and chlorine, and to some extent also from the chemicals previously used
in the wood processing industry. Fortunately, the environmental toxins
are bound to the sediments, and will not spread unless the river bottom
is treated by e.g. dredging.
However, Kymijoki's water has been steadily cleaned over the past
decades, thanks to the reduction in emissions. Today, Kymijoki has
returned to being a significant salmon river in Southern Finland.
