In the 1870's, Prescott was the Territorial Capitalof Arizona. As the center of administration for the Arizona Territory, payroll for the military at Fort Tuthill was shipped north on a regular basis. So regular, the neer do wells sitting in the bars of Prescott and Flagstaff were commonly heard to talk of ways that the payroll could be "borrowed".
The dishonest weren't the only ones thinking of security, or lack thereof. Stagecoach management was also thinking of ways to confound potential thieves. The first, and obvious step, was to add a lock to the strongbox, but locks never seems to stop anyone looking for LOOT.
The Colonel figured the most likely place for people to try to steal the payroll from a stagecoach was at the top of Schnebly Hill road since the team would be tired after the steep climb. The Colonel also realized that it wasn't far from the top of Schnebly hill to Fort Tuthill so he figured that the stagecoach could gain a bit of time if they had a decoy strongbox that they could toss out when the bad guys hollared fork it over!
The payroll was never succesfully stolen, but the decoy was used once and remains where it the bad guys left it.
This is a two step multi. At the posted coordinates you'll find a flake of gold (a large flake, as gold flakes go) embossed with the coordinates necessary to find what the stagecoach tossed out when the bad guys told them to fork it over!
Please re-lock the lockbox! The lock needs to be set to the combination, then closed, and then scramble the wheels. Also, please recover the container before you leave.
