Celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with other geocachers. The autumnal equinox occurs in September each year, and in the northern hemisphere the date marks the end of summer and beginning of autumn.
As most of us know, the Earth is tilted on its axis. This means that the Sun illuminates the northern or southern hemisphere more depending where the Earth is along its orbit.
However, at two points in the year the Sun will illuminate the northern and southern hemispheres equally. These are known as the equinoxes.
This year the autumnal equinox officially happens on Fri, Sep 22, 2023, at 11:49 PM Pacific Time. If you're still up that late, congratulations for marking the exact moment of the equinox! I'm not hosting an event that late at night so we will watch the sun set over the lake (at 7:07 PM) for the last time of summer 2023.
You may see some publications identifying the equinox officially on the 23rd, but that is because they're in a different time zone. For them, midnight will have come and gone at the official moment so it's technically on the 23rd for them.
