In 1913 vond de Wereldtentoonstelling plaats in Gent, onder meer in het Citadelpark en het miljoenenkwartier. Voor deze Expo werd het treinstation Gent St Pieters gebouwd.

Het Gravensteen werd in 1180 gebouwd, maar werd in de 19de eeuw vooral gebruikt voor industrie en arbeidershuisjes. In 1887 werd het kasteel terug opgekocht door de overheid en begonnen de renovatiewerken. Voor de wereldexpo in Gent in 1913 werd er vaart gezet achter de renovatiewerken: 25 jaar na de aankoop was het kasteel net op tijd terug klaar voor de Wereldtentoonstelling.

The Gravensteen was built in 1180, but in the 19th century it was mainly used for industry and workers' houses. In 1887 the castle was bought back by the gouvernment and renovation works began. For the World Expo in Ghent in 1913, the renovation work was accelerated: 25 years after the purchase, the castle was ready just in time for the World Exhibition.
