LA FOIBA DI BASOVIZZA
La cosiddetta "Foiba di Basovizza" era in origine un pozzo minerario profondo 256m. Dal maggio del 1945 venne utilizzato dai partigiani Jugoslavi per l'occultamento di un numero imprecisato di cadaveri di Italiani e Tedeschi durante l'occupazione Jugoslava di Trieste.
Le vittime destinate ad essere scaraventate nella voragine, venivano portate con gli autocarri a Basovizza; arrivavano spesso con le mani legate dal fil di ferro e avvinte fra loro a catena. Dopo essere state sospinte a gruppi verso l'orlo dell'abisso, una scarica di mitra sui primi faceva precipitare tutti nel baratro.
Nel 1992 la foiba è stata riconosciuta come monumento nazionale; nel 2007, in seguito ad una serie di lavori di recupero e di restauro, è stato ufficialmente inaugurato il nuovo sacrario in onore dei martiri delle foibe.

THE FOIBA OF BASOVIZZA
The "Foiba of Basovizza" was originally a 256m deep mining pit. Since May 1945, it was used by Yugoslav partisans for the concealment of an unknown number of bodies of Italians and Germans during the Yugoslav occupation of Trieste.
The victims destined to be thrown into the abyss were taken by trucks to Basovizza; they often arrived with their hands tied with wire and tied together in chains. After being pushed in groups towards the edge of the abyss, shooting at the first ones caused everyone to fall into the abyss.
In 1992 the foiba was recognized as a national monument; In 2007, following a series of restoration works, the new sanctuary was officially inaugurated in honor of the martyrs of the foibe.
