Sugar was produced
Sugar was produced in the following way: The ground had to be dug, hoed, weeded, planted and then fertilised with manure, all under the hot , tropical KZN sun. Slave gangs consisting of men, women and children worked under overseers. They were whipped for not working hard enough. Enslaved people worked from dawn until dusk.
Cane Growing In South Africa
Sugarcane is a strategic crop for KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, where sugarcane production is located, comprising a substantial percentage of field crop gross farming income across the two provinces. As per 2019/2020 figures, there are 21 926 registered sugarcane growers who annually produce on average 20 million tons of sugarcane from 14-mill supply areas, extending from southern KwaZulu-Natal to the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Currently, growers are represented by the South African Cane Growers’ Association (SACGA) and the South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA). There are 20 711 small-scale growers, 1 126 large-scale growers and 89 miller-cum-planters.
