Geocache Description:

Double the Greats

My dad might think this is a great spot, but for me it is doubly so [groan]

While most of my family has been in the United States for some time, our move to Michigan and Hillsdale was a bit slower (we generally move a township a generation these days). Before you, you will see the gravestone of my 2nd-Great Grandfather, John Henry Stemen and his second wife, Emma. By pedigree this is the oldest relative of mine buried here. My 2nd-Great Grandmother Matilda Spangler (yes, I am distantly related the business you may see from this vantage point) and her parents were actually the first to settle in Hillsdale before moving to Albion and being buried there. My 3rd-Great Grandfather Daniel Spangler was a fireman (opposite task of what you normally think of that profession) at the Power Plant in Hillsdale. Matilda, my 2nd-Great Grandmother, was the first wife of John Henry Stemen, but she died of the Spanish Flu in 1918.
