Geocache Description:

AA #11: Welcome to Welcome Way!

The cache, a camo-taped 35mm film canister, is hidden a short distance down a grassy side lane off a bend of Hallam Lane, which is on the route of a long-distance walking path - the Welcome Way.

This 'fabulous' 36-mile circular walk which opened in 2016 connects Baildon, Bingley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley and Ben Rhydding. It is divided into 3 main sections with numerous access points along the way. It is waymarked in both directions (a footprint with a yellow or blue arrow), easy to follow, can be done in short or long sections, and takes advantage of easily accessible public transport connections.

The main route passes through moorland landscapes, alongside rivers, canals and reservoirs, across farmland, through woodland and through the centre of each of the communities allowing walkers to become familiar with their unique history and amenities.

The route also intersects with numerous other (long-distance) walks and trails including the Dales Way (and Links), Ebor Way, Millenium Way (Bradford) and Six Dales Trail.

Along this stretch the route coming from Otley passes up Hallam Lane to just south of Grassgarth Farm before heading west across the fields north of Askwith village then further north-west before looping around to head down and south crossing Denton Bridge over the Wharfe to Ben Rhydding and beyond.

A guidebook is available which includes OS maps and route descriptions for each section, information about each community, historical information, accommodation available and transport links.

The walk project is supported by various local authorities including North Yorkshire County Council, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, Leeds City Council and Nidderdale AONB.
