Deer Lodge was selected by the government of Montana Territory (prior to statehood) to be the site of the regional prison. Construction began in 1870, and the first 9 prisoners were incarcerated July of 1871. It remained in use until 1979. The Old Prison's walls still loom over Main Street, but it is now a museum.
